Handling Fall Yard Waste and Storm Debris
Autumn brings two different disposal problems, and they need different containers.
Yard waste is heavy and often separate
Leaves, brush and cut limbs are dense once wet, and many areas process green waste at composting facilities rather than landfills — at a lower rate. Ask whether the hauler has a yard waste rate before you mix it with general debris, because mixing it usually loses you the cheaper rate.
Storm debris moves fast
After a significant storm, local availability disappears within a day. If you have damage and insurance is involved, photograph everything before it goes in the container — once it's hauled, it's gone, and adjusters ask.
Check what your municipality already collects
Many towns run free curbside brush collection in autumn, and some do a bulk pickup day. If your debris is purely organic and you're not in a hurry, that's free where a container isn't.
Book before the first freeze
In northern states, seasonal road weight restrictions can limit truck access in late winter. Anything you plan to clear is easier to get collected in October than in March.
