The Spring Cleanout Checklist Most People Skip
Spring is the busiest season for dumpster rental, which means the worst availability and the least flexible pricing. A little planning changes both.
Book earlier than feels necessary
April through June is peak season. Haulers who can drop a container next day in February are booked a week out in May. If your project has a fixed start date, reserve the container when you schedule the work, not when you're ready to fill it.
Sort before the container arrives
The single biggest waste of a rental is filling it with things that shouldn't go in. Set aside paint, batteries, tires and electronics first — most counties run a household hazardous waste collection in spring, and it's free.
Decide what you're really throwing away
People consistently underestimate a whole-house declutter and overestimate a garage. A garage that looks full is usually a 15-yard. A house where you're clearing three decades of storage is a 30, sometimes two. Walk the rooms and count in pickup loads — six to a 20-yard.
Watch the weight on yard waste
Soil, sod and wet brush are far heavier than they look. A container of dirt hits the weight limit while it still looks half empty. If you're clearing beds, ask whether the hauler has a separate rate for clean fill.
