What a residential dumpster is
A container sized to fit a driveway and to handle what comes out of a house: a cleanout, a remodel, a garage, a move.
Who rents one
Homeowners. The distinction that matters to a hauler is not the waste, it is the access: a residential job means a driveway, a tight turn, and a surface somebody cares about.
The thing that catches people out
Driveway damage is the real risk and the one nobody asks about. Plywood under the wheels is standard practice and most companies will lay it if you ask when you book.
How it differs from the others
Construction jobs take bigger containers and heavier loads. Ordering a 30-yard for a house clearout usually means paying for space you cannot fill and, in many streets, a container that will not fit.
Choosing the size
Most household jobs land on a 10, 15 or 20 yard, and the deciding factor is how many rooms are involved rather than how full they look. A single room or a bathroom gut is a 10 yard. A garage, a basement or a roof up to about 15 squares is a 15. A kitchen remodel, whole-house flooring or a serious clearance is a 20.
Where people get it wrong is furniture. A house full of furniture is almost all air, and it eats volume at a rate that surprises everyone. Breaking a dresser into panels rather than throwing it in whole is the single biggest thing you can do to avoid needing a second container. The first rental guide covers loading order.
What moves the price
Access is what makes a residential job different from a commercial one, and it is priced accordingly. A hauler is thinking about the turn into your street, whether the truck can back in, what is overhead, and whether the driveway will take the weight. A job that needs a smaller truck or a longer walk costs more, and a job the driver cannot complete costs you a trip charge for nothing.
Two things are worth settling before you book. Whether the container is going on the driveway or the street, because the street needs a permit in most cities. And whether the driveway surface is one you care about, because asphalt in warm weather marks under a loaded container and plywood under the wheels is the standard fix.
